Westside Grand Rapids

Building relationships and energy resilience.

Time frame:
2011 – current

Key moments:

  • Village mindset that opened up communication channels with schools, churches, etc.

  • Pulled forms off factories from the Westside to use on New Holland and Bridge Street Market

  • Energy infrastructure: installed solar on parking deck, neighborhood battery system, underground power lines

  • Iconic projects in key locations spurred buy-in, infill and excitement

  • Bringing a long-desired grocery store downtown, and the accompanying logistics to pull it off

Challenge:
This urban renewal project required some repurposing, but also presented us with a clean slate on several key sites. Blending iconic new project sites in a way that both respected and harmonized with the environment and the culture of the Westside was key.

Our approach:
Sustainability and conservation were intentionally built into every area of this project, integrated design details were employed (forms and profiles from area factories), and a deepened collaborative relationship with the community and Consumers Energy was developed.

Success factors:
The goal was to create a new brand on the Westside – with real impact. This required cultivating relationships to raise the funds and to meet with that team consistently, to this day. The longevity of ownership, working with the community, and bringing in resources residents need have resulted in success.

Key characteristics of the project

  • Circuit West: partnership with Consumers Energy to install solar on parking deck roof

  • Green roof on Bridge Street Market
